Meal Swap

I would like to start a meal swap with three other moms. I was thinking that we could all get 4 of the same 8x11 grass pyrex pans with lids. Then at the first of each month we all make four of the same dishes that can be put in the freezer. Then we swap. That way each family would have four different meals to eat thoughout the month. And we would have 3 meals that we didn't have to prepare!!! We would not need to return dishes, just start over at the first of the month. Does this make any sense? We would need to figure out the specifics (foods most families like, how much meat/veggies, and other stuff that I am not thinking about). If you are interest contact Stephanie Finlayson 245-9392. If I get more than 3 other people interested, perhaps we could put together another group.

Food storage sale

Hey everyone, You'll want to check out the great deals this week (Aug 13-19) at Maceys and Albertsons. Albertsons has boneless skinless chicken for $1.69 lb, this includes tenders too if you like them better. They also have paper towels, toilet paper, and laundry detergent for a great deal. And don't miss Maceys. They have wheat (hard red and hard white) in the buckets ready to store for $21.99 for 45lbs. I've priced this out, it's cheaper than the wheat in buckets at Sam's club, and within pennies of buying the wheat from the cannery, and buying the buckets, and doing it all yourself with a lot less work! Maceys also has sugar and flour for $8.88 for 25 lbs. Just check out the ad. Remember, both of these stores run their sales from Wed thru Tues.

Hello Wellsville 2nd ward! Many of you already know me and my darling daughter Ellie, isn't she soooo talented. I'm posting today to let you know that I will begin teaching piano lessons this fall. I have played myself since I was six years old and have 12 years teaching experience. I participated in numerous competitions and events at Utah State University when I took lessons there for approximately five of those years. I charge $30/ month, which includes four thirty-minute lessons. I am also a half-day teacher at Willow Valley Middle School and have taught school for eight years now. Give me a call if you are interested 770-6114, or e-mail me at hollystreaker1@yahoo.com. You could also just leave a comment for me on the blog. Feel free to spread the word to other friends in town as well.

West Nile Virus

I saw on the news tonight that mosquitoes infected with West Nile Virus were found in Wellsville, Young Ward, and Logan. http://www.myfoxutah.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail;jsessionid=2622E79A1F2222EEF189F1BC2F455CB4?contentId=7138416&version=1&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=1.1.1&sflg=1

"Severe symptoms [of West Nile Virus] can include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, disorientation, coma, vision loss and paralysis. These symptoms may last several weeks and neurological effects may be permanent. People over the age of 50 are at the highest risk of developing severe WNV disease." http://www.brhd.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=131&Itemid=31

Prevent Bites

  • Protect From Dusk Until Dawn. That is when mosquitoes that carry the virus are most active, so take precautions to prevent mosquito bites.

  • Use mosquito repellents that contain DEET* when doing any outdoor activity between dusk and dawn. (Follow the label instructions carefully.)

  • For adults, use repellents containing up to 35% DEET. (Concentrations higher than 50% do not provide additional protection.)

  • For children 2 months–12 years, use repellents containing up to 10% DEET. Do not put DEET on children’s hands or feet.

  • For children under the age of 2 months, do not use DEET.

  • Consider wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants for additional protection. Wear protective clothing like long-sleeved shirts and long pants while outdoors.

  • Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in an unscreened structure and to protect small babies any time.

  • Remove Standing Water. Drain standing water, since that's where mosquitoes lay eggs. This includes tires, cans, puddles, barrels, etc.

West Nile virus is rare, but if you have symptoms including high fever, severe headache and stiff neck, contact your health care provider immediately. Though anyone can be infected and become ill, severe illness or death is more common in people over age 50. http://health.utah.gov/epi/diseases/wnv/Prevention/Protectingyourselfandyourfamily/prevent.htm

Dry pack canner use

The following is a message from Mary Ann Degn.

We have had questions about the possibility of taking our own products to the dry pack cannery to have them sealed in cans. That is no longer allowed because of the possibility of contamination. We have, however, been able to reserve a canner to bring into the ward. We will have it from noon on this Tuesday, the 29th, until Thursday morning. We have to have it back to the cannery by Thursday at noon. If you are interested, here's the game plan. Mary Ann Degn will pick up the machine and any cans, lids, etc. that people need. If you are not able to get the money to Mary Ann by 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday and still want to participate, you could pick them up yourself at the cannery (165 E 2200N in North Logan - 752-6425). The cost of cans+lids+oxypacks (used for everything but sugar) = $.60 a piece. For every 6 cans a plastic lid will be provided free of charge. They will not let us return any unused cans, so try to figure it exactly. According to their calculations, this is the amount you will need.
Weight in lbs. - Product - No. of cans
25 - Black Beans - 4 1/2
25 - Pinto Beans - 4 3/4
25 - White Beans - 4 3/4
25 - Powered Milk - 6
25 - White Rice - 4 1/3
25 - Sugar, granulated - 4
25 - Wheat, Hard Red - 4 1/3
25 - Wheat, Hard White - 4 1/3
15 - Apple Slices - 11 1/2
25 - Carrots - 9
20 - Macaroni - 5 3/4
25 - Oats, Quick - 9 2/3
25 - Oats, Regular - 9 1/4
35 - Onions, Dry - 12 1/2
25 - Potato Flakes - 13 3/4
25 - Spaghetti - 5 3/4
25 - Beans, Refried - 10 1/2
25 - Cocoa Mix, Hot - 4 1/3
25 - Flour, White - 5 1/4
25 - Fruit Drink Mix - 4

We hope this gives you an idea. Obviously, you can fill these cans with anything you want.
If you are interested in taking advantage of this canner, please call Mary Ann Degn (245-3467) for an appointment time. The canner will be in her garage ( unless anyone has a better idea). We hope this will be of use to the members of the ward. Remember, -the money for the cans needs to be to Mary Ann no later than 10:00 a.m. this Tuesday if you would like her to pick them up for you.

P.S. Irene Lusk is passing on a tip about her favorite powdered milk substitute. Macey's currently has Morning Moo Milk for $109 for a 50 lbg. bag. On the 16th of August it will go on sale for $79.

Wraps: Main Dish

Here is a main dish you can make without heating up your kitchen. It is very simple.

Ingredients:
  • 8 ounces sour cream
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 1 package dry ranch dressing mix
  • tortillas
  • tops you want

Method:

  • mix sour cream, cream cheese, and ranch dressing mix until smooth. This makes the "spread" for your wrap.
  • put the amount of desired spread on wrap. Put other toppings on wrap. Some ideas for topics include meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, olives, etc. Whatever you want.
  • close it up like a burrito and eat!

How To Use This Blog

I know not all people are intuitively "savvy" when it comes to computer stuff, so I thought I would create a "how-to" so more people can participate on this blog.

To Create a Post:
Definition: A post is what you are reading right now. Each post on this blog starts with the date and title in green, then the text in black. There is a green line separating each post. As I type this, only Laraine and Valerie have posted so far.

We can have as many authors as we want on the blog. To write a post on this blog, you need to first be invited by Valerie to do so (not just verbally, but electronically :) ). If you would like to be able to post on this blog, you can either leave a comment that includes your email address (instructions below on how to do that) or email Valerie at valplowman@yahoo.com. You do need an email address to be able to be invited.

Let me assure you that to create a post on a blog is just as easy as writing and sending an email. If you can email, you can create a post. Once you have been invited, let Valerie or Laraine know if you need help posting your first time. No problem.

To Comment:
I have set comments to allow anonymous comments on this blog. That way, you can comment without creating a username and password. If you comment anonymously, please add your name to the comment so we know who wrote it.

If you want to share information but creating a post intimidates you, you can always share it in the form of a comment. Valerie will then make it into a post for you.

You can also make comments to each post about the post. To comment:
  1. Go to the bottom of the post you want to comment on. If you are commenting to request to be an author, comment on any post. You can also ask questions by commenting on any post.
  2. Look for the words that say "0 comments" or "1 comment" etc. (depending on how many comments have been made).
  3. Click on those words.
  4. A new window will open.
  5. Click in the comment box under "Leave Your Comment."
  6. Type your comment.
  7. Scroll down and choose what identity to use to comment by clicking in the radio button (the round thing next to how you want to comment).
  8. Click "Publish Your Comment"
  9. You are done!

To Post Without Commenting or Becoming a Blog Author
If it is easier for you, you can just email your post to Valerie and she will post it for you.

This will be a great place for sharing recipes, tips, deals, etc. I hope all who want to will participate, so please ask if you have questions.
